Before Hitting Any Club, Do This for 5 Seconds - Live Golf Lesson
Apr 07, 2025Transcript Summary-
Hey guys, so in this video I want to bring you right into a live golf lesson I just had with a wonderful lady golfer named Tina. She came to me struggling—not just with her irons, but also her woods off the ground and the driver. By the end of the session, she gained nearly 50 yards on her drives… and we captured the entire transformation live.
Now before we dive in, if you’re new to the channel, welcome! I release videos like this every single week to help you improve your game—and you don’t need to remember a thing, because everything in this lesson is broken down into a free downloadable practice guide linked below.
Right—let’s get into it.
At the start of the session, Tina was struggling with consistency. Her swing path was way across the golf ball, causing pulls and slices. Her setup had a slice built in, with her chest and pelvis too far forward, leading to her shoulders and hips aiming left. So, we started with a simple setup routine: hold the club out in front, drop it straight down, and move to the ball sideways—not reaching.
This instantly squared her up—shoulders, hips, knees, forearms all aligned. Massive improvement already.
Then we looked at ball flight. Tina believed the ball should fly straight. But I explained that golf is played on an arc—and the most natural shot, especially off the ground, is a draw. Trying to hit straight leads to tension and inconsistency. So instead, we focused on shaping the ball, understanding how club path and face direction create curve.
We practiced feeling a closed face, swinging the club out to the right with the face more square to target. That’s when it started to click.
As we progressed to longer clubs and eventually driver, we noticed the same thing: her body wanted to lean forward to reach the ball, which threw her alignment off again. So, I gave her a repeatable routine for driver setup—arms resting naturally, club dropping down, and then sliding into position from behind. This allowed her to stay behind the ball and deliver power without slicing.
Once we dialed in her curve and setup, Tina started hitting it beautifully. Not only did her shots go straighter, but she also felt like she was swinging with less effort—and she gained nearly 50 yards of distance!
By the end, she was confidently shaping shots, understanding how to manage curve, contact, and direction. It wasn’t about thinking too much—it was about drawing the picture, feeling the swing, and trusting the process.
Tina was brilliant, and it was such a pleasure coaching her. If you found this helpful and you’d like to see more live lessons, check out the playlist right here. And if you’re new, don’t forget to subscribe down below.

Full Transcript- So in a second I want to bring you in on a live golf lesson I've just had with a lady golfer who wanted to improve not just the irons but you want to improve a woods off the ground and a driver i want to bring you in on the entire process because by the end we added almost 50 yards to the driving you're going to see this absolutely live thank you so much you're going to see the stepbystep process that I took her through from her un inability to strike it consistently well to start with to getting it striking it to getting her accuracy and then how we then increased her power it's super super simple but she was falling for one of the biggest traps I see with so many golfers so before I get into the video look if you're new to the channel it's one of your first lessons of mine please consider subscribing i release videos just like this one every single week to try and help you improve your game plus you never have to remember a thing everything we do in this video I'll put into a free downloadable practice guide in that description box below now I'm going to bring you in on the lesson in just a second uh before I do though let me give you some context of where we're at so at the end of the session Tina said she was surprised at how far the ball was going cuz it felt easy on the body it felt almost effortless but that wasn't the case at the start of the session she came to see me with ultimately a swing that would swing way across the golf ball like this this minor swing direction huge path going left this would occasionally create a big slice to the right if she had a fair square it would pull it way to the left but she was really inconsistent with the ball striking so the first thing we did was we looked at what she had at the start of the swing and I suggest you to have a look at your setup too so when you set up to a golf ball most people without them realizing have some golf shot built in she had a slice initially built in at setup the first thing I did with her I said "Look put a club down the middle of your chest like this hold it so it goes from the middle of your chest through the middle of your pelvis and simply bend forward." When she did this this club was pointing way too much to the to the right leg the trail leg here what does this mean it means her body's too much this way angled towards the golf ball so this center here is ahead of this center here this sends the shoulders the hips and the forearms left of target so she's already got what shot built in that's right a swing that goes left right so that was the first thing we did simple routine I gave her she I you know we tried two things one was to put the club up here and simply bend forward so it's pointing in the middle of the body she actually preferred this one where we'd look point the club out in front of front of you as if you're talking to somebody drop the club down like this then just bring the club down she loved this because ultimately it was just more relaxing to do and it was more repeatable she could do that on a golf course then I said move to the golf ball by just having a little slide towards the golf ball like this now look forearms shoulders knees hips are all nicely square they're not aiming in this direction huge starting point right so we now had a a pretty much a a much better shot built in but she also had something else that was interfering with her entire golf swing she thought that a golf shot should fly straight and that's what she was striving for now the problem with this is this the golf swing is an arc right now what we do as golfers is there's a low point to your rack and it's right underneath your lead shoulder but we don't want to hit a golf ball there right we The reason being is is there's no margin of error if you are just a centimeter backwards you've basically fatted the golf ball and you've lost loads of power and consistency so what we do we want to increase your margin of error for striking it so we position the ball two to three balls back of your lead shoulder now the problem sometimes with that is first of all you're now changing where you hit the golf ball on the arc so if I was to set up here look and I put the low point now look ahead of this golf ball as I'm swinging backwards and forwards where's this club heading or attacking the golf ball it's heading at the golf ball but the club is heading where to the right of target almost down this line before it goes back around to the low point here so how do you hit a ball straight well you can but it goes against what is natural in a golf swing this was a huge eye opener for Tina so I said to her I want you to see the golf ball in curves i want you to realize that ultimately we're going to strike the golf ball as the club is heading almost on this line but will not go to the right it would do if you don't close the face so we want the path of the club going down this line but we want the face look on this middle line how do you do that well this is where we start to explore i got her first of all to kind of feel the closed face and I just got to make some swings with her head swinging what she felt was on that line while the club was on the middle line well let me bring you in on that session now because what happened next was pretty amazing
no it's all right i have no idea so let me do You do you do you do look at this look at the ball again so so here's the thing if you ever feel like you're losing it don't don't think too much don't think too much right just again you know you're an artist as well remember right so so just draw the picture right in your mind don't don't start to think intellectually about this okay get yourself set okay and just draw the picture look at the ball right look how the club is interacting with that ball yes just look at that there that's it m whether it's a nine or eight iron seven or anything it's the same it's the same if you interact like this the ball's going to have some spin on it yes yeah and and so you don't have to over analyze that it's just there that's it yeah yes yeah just in a sense you're just painting that
picture now that's a great Now you've really exaggerated watch this movement now yeah yeah just you've closed it see you've exaggerated it brilliant yeah so I you what you do is is you go okay and this is where you have to practice yeah remember the best players in the world are spending their rest of their life trying to manage the shape of their shot they can they can hit it a long way you're starting to hit it a long way they can strike it consistently but the one thing that they're inconsistent at is they don't always manage their shape what you're doing now is you're learning to start to feel what creates Yes help how do I manage that shape onto the green yeah
okay just like that better yeah yeah you just did it look uh-huh we affected the strike a little bit but we've got the numbers in the right order a slightly more positive and negative path so you're more that way yeah that's right that's right and not so high but more Well if Yeah if you got If you got too high it's hard to get here isn't it yeah yeah absolutely absolutely yeah yeah
yeah look at that you really ex You're pushing those boundaries aren't you yeah and so you can You're pushing those boundaries see now you're feeling it now with a seven eye mhm and then and all you do It's easy yeah it is isn't it it is easy and then you're just like "Ah okay this is how we go." And now what I have to do the same with a more open club face yeah that's it yeah just as you did before remember if we remember this again yeah yeah those three things yes one two three three yes yeah so that if if for you to hit that one there you have basically that face is aiming too far left yes so we want it we don't want it too far right but we want somewhere in between and you need to feel that about the same uh curve exactly
a bit like that got it that's it wow so Tina's really enjoying the freedom that comes from allowing the ball or realizing the ball is absolutely normal it should curve and that's what you should be going for rather than that stiffness that comes from precision and straight that she wants to know how to apply it to woods and she asks a really great question here can I get a um a bigger curve if I go more this way more down not down not not not this way if you if you did that you may hit too much too much yes yeah so you have to come here yeah that's it it's still got See left shoulder's gone low yeah see now yes now you can come down on that ball yes you can there you go so look yes i want to go there but I want I want the shoulder to go downwards and around not just around there you go okay then you can come down yeah
yeah ah a little bit but it's okay but notice this mhm when you start to think of swing too much you'll be not relaxed well not relaxed but also you start to disconnect a little bit from Yeah this ball and those last two swings are the first time you've You've gone back to a slightly minus number yeah so the now what you want to do is what I love is this the if there's a system here the system is this what do we want the ball to do goal number one well we know that if a ball's on the ground the most natural shape is a draw mhm yeah great how is that created step two the club and the ball how do they react the club goes one way the face is aiming another way we create shape brilliant let's feel that so this this is the system yeah that's the show we got the shape and club and ball then and you could say club and hands doing this right the next stage is then just see that and stay in that area just try and shape it the next stage is then body how can the body help you do that yeah yeah but but you don't focus on the body in isolation yeah yeah yeah so whatever happens the system is is what flight do you want what does that mean for the club and the ball and how can your body help and how can your body help you do that but one after the other but one after the other yes not where most people are which is I must get this left shoulder down now to do this cuz it's it and lost the other things lost all the lost other things so you always go back to that simple i get stable in that yes and after that without losing it you kind of join the dots it's like okay yes there's the head there's the ball right how can I make this more efficient yeah more under control maybe yes there's my body my body's helping me do that now uhhuh but we still have it in place
just like that you got it so as we move to driver Tina asked me is there any changes well as is norm with a lot of players that coach when they move to driver this is t kind of what happens it starts with setup first the ball position is opposite look our lead here roughly okay now what Tina did I see this a lot so be aware of this tina goes to reach the golf ball and she moves towards the golf ball with the upper torso what this actually does then is send your your shoulders your forearms all aiming look for me left of target what Tina did there as a byproduct is she simply swung across the golf ball exactly what she was doing with the irions and the hybrid to start with so I needed to build a simple routine with a driver all I did was get her to kind of hold the club up directly in front of her here arms naturally resting on her side i then got her to drop the club down so she was actually setting up now a good few inches behind the golf ball with her head then from here she could move towards the ball just by moving sideways not by going to reach it this way that gave her the opportunity for us to start to kind of hit it much much straighter she did she started to hit the ball a little bit further i want to bring you in another part of the lesson now where we start to improve her distance and her accuracy
i the feeling was much better good but 200 y now not the result not yet so we haven't got the direction yet but it's it was it was the best feeling yes what are we seeing with the direction and this number to the left to the left so if we know that if we know we're swinging to the left we've we're we've fixed a bit of the posture if I think about the curve I have to create the curve bigger that's it that's it that's it so you look at the ball again right and you go so you set yourself up and you look at that and you go right how do I create the curve okay how do I create it yeah okay just so just like the nine the seven and the hybrid we're going to create the curve but we But it's the reason why I focus on set I want set up right first is because it's much harder if you set up like this isn't it yeah if you set up like this you're already setting a curve that's going the wrong way yeah
well done well done much better yeah look what you just did most people spend their lives and I'm I'm talking 30 years not being able to do what you've just done in one ball there just by changing that you've changed your slice into a little draw yes it's exaggerated more than we wanted but you turned it into a draw so you've got the skill to be able to do that if I just I need to have the bigger curve in my mind bigger curve in your mind so you start there mhm you start with that curve and then we refine it yeah we give you control over that but [Music] um when I thought about the curves I must do a a very very big curve to get straight yes that's the end of the story it is absolutely right okay absolutely right the feeling is that you need a big curve isn't it and then you And it's still Yeah absolutely
it's okay that must be more straight yeah look at that and now we're up to 210 yards
how good is that it it the feeling is much more easy yeah in what in what way is it easy it is more relaxed for your body it's not so uh no more feeling that the body wants to do something else no so he's he agree with you with your because you're just you as a human being right once we have the right pictures in our mind our bodies might not be perfect at getting there but they know what to do yes and then all you do you spend the rest of your life trying to just kind of get closer to it yeah and then oh it's too much oh adjust it but when you start to think Yeah yeah yeah yeah i can't do that you It's lost everyone's lost but the picture and just do it yeah just that's it and And we're setting up what's nice now is though you're setting up you're giving yourself a chance at setup yes
now I bit it on the wrong on the wrong side that's perfect that's perfect it's good so So just to finish off Tina uh-huh what you can do here right just use your logic here as well right so you want to create your feeling is that you want to create a big curve isn't it so right now your low point is 6.7 in yes before the ball yes so that means so watch this if the low point is a long way behind the golf ball where's the club going to heading now as it goes left going left isn't it up and left it's going up and left yes so if we want to reduce that all Yeah ju just a little bit i stand a little bit more to the left ju yes but just a little because what I don't want you to do is drive i I still would like you to be behind the golf ball yeah i really do because it's it'll go with your power and I think it will help you hit longer we don't want to hit down too much but the direction but the direction so we're just going to move it just a little bit just a little bit okay this is my normal and I go That'll do that'll do for now yeah but then still imagine you're setting up straight there that's Yeah
oh yeah
lovely and there's your straighter shot and look what look what you did you did just do it a little bit but what that does is it's gonna give you that much greater shot all right all right wow thank you so much so what a lovely lady Tina was wonderful to have her thank you so much for taking the time to watch if you enjoyed this video and you'd like to see more live lessons from me click this playlist right here if you're new to the channel press the subscribe button down here but until next week have a wonderful golfing.
