The One Golf Tip That Improves Almost Every Golf Swing

irons irons drill Dec 02, 2024

Transcript Summary-

Golf can feel like a minefield sometimes, can’t it? Especially when you’re trying to hit your driver straight or strike your irons better. Where do you even start? Well, if you’re a regular to my channel, you’ve seen me help students improve live on camera, often with just one simple change to their swing. This one adjustment can fix multiple issues all at once and have you striking the ball cleaner and hitting drives straighter. I’m going to share that change with you today because it’s straightforward and incredibly effective. But before we dive in, if you’re new here, consider subscribing. I release videos like this every week to help you improve your game, and I always include a free practice guide in the description below, so you’ve got everything you need to take your golf to the next level.

This week, as I was walking along the driving range at Canterbury, I noticed something fascinating. Players were working hard to stop slicing their drivers or to strike their irons better. The problem? They were focusing on the right things but in the wrong order, which was holding them back. What they—and maybe you—need to focus on first is the clubface. So, with every golfer I helped, I started by fixing their clubface position, and immediately, their accuracy and ball striking improved.

Let me explain why. If you slice the ball, chances are your clubface is wide open at impact. Even if you swing on the perfect path, an open face sends the ball miles right. Similarly, with irons, you might know you need to get your hands and weight forward for a good strike, but if the face is open, you’ll end up hitting it offline or struggling with fat or thin shots. What happens is that golfers unconsciously compensate for an open face in different ways—either flipping their hands or swinging over the top—but those compensations cause even more problems. So, we start by squaring the clubface at the top of the backswing. Once the face is square, the swing becomes much more efficient and effective.

To help you feel this, I sometimes use a training aid like HackMotion, which provides feedback on whether the face is square. But you don’t need any fancy equipment; just practice the feel of a square face at the top of your backswing. Spend time experimenting, closing the face a bit if necessary, and learning what square feels like. When you get this right, everything else in your swing improves—direction, ball striking, and even power.

Once you’ve mastered the clubface, the next step is building power and consistency. I use a simple drill where you hold the club like a hockey stick and push it through impact, mimicking the motion of your lead hand pulling up and your trail hand pushing through. This helps you feel how the hands and arms should work on an arc through impact, generating both power and accuracy. The key is to let this movement flow naturally, with the lead hand driving up and the trail hand pushing forward, creating a solid, powerful strike. This same principle applies to your driver—just adjust for the setup, and you’ll see how effective it is.

If you practice these steps, you’ll build a strong foundation for your golf swing. Start with the clubface, then work on the hockey drill to generate more power and consistency. Try adding it to your pre-shot routine to develop muscle memory. I’ll be releasing a video soon showing this in action on the golf course, so keep an eye out for that.

If you found this helpful, give it a thumbs up and share it with a friend who might need it. For more about HackMotion, check the top comment for details and a discount code. And if you want to see me demonstrate these tips with a driver, check out this video right here. Have a great golfing week, and I’ll see you next time!

so if you're on the search to hit drive straight or strike your irons better it's a real mindfield isn't it where do you start well if you're regular to my channel you'll see me improving students live on camera

better how did that one feel

wower really really quickly and you'll probably see that I'm working on generally first one simple change in their swing this change has a huge effects a lot of people are trying to improve their swing by focus on four or five things this one thing can improve five things like that and have you st hitting Drive much straighter and striking your irons better I'm going to share with you what it is in this video because it is really really simple and I just know is going to help but before I do if you are new to the channel it's one of your first lessons of mine please consider subscribing relase videos like this every single week to try and help you improve your game plus you never have to remember a thing I'll always put a free download practice guide in that description box below so if you're ready funny this week I was walking up and down the driving range here at Canterbury and and one of the things it was really fascinating to see people trying to stop slicing the driver and you had other people trying to strike their ions better and they were working on the right things but in the wrong order and therefore they just weren't getting better they need to focus on what I'm going about to show you first before they work on anything else and that is Club face so what I did with every one of them I first fixed their Club face and that immediately improved the accuracy they're short and they're ball striking I'll show you how so ultimately what happens is this if you slice the golf ball right you've probably seen it you're coming over the top of the ball you slice it across the golf ball you put all this spin on it because the face is wide open and you've been told you shouldn't come over the top you should come down here Etc but here's the problem if your face is wide open and you come down on the perfect path what where's that ball going to go miles out to the right the other thing look is this if you're striking you want to strike your irons you know you've got to get that handle forward your weight forward strike the ball then the ground but if your face is wide open coming down where's the ball going to go way out over there so what you do is is and this is what's happening to each one of these people on the Range they didn't realize the club face is wide open at the top of the Swing so what they do unconsciously is this they have different ways to kind of get it back to straight or Square some people would do this now it's straight but where's my hands now behind the golf ball so I'm starting to strike the ground and hit almost up on the ball fatting it topping it thinning it some people would do the opposite what they do is rather than kind of use their wrists to come down what they will do is they'll have an open face and they'll go over the top look to try and square the face that squares the face but now the path of the club is swinging where left to Target and they hit a Big Slice so all I did was give them an exercise to first get that club face square at the top because if it's Square square at the top all you then have to do is this I can rotate beautifully onto the shot look to get it square and look from this angle if the club face is square and all I do is now rotate my hands now ahead of the golf ball but also the club face is square so it kills two birds in one stone it helps create amazing swings now what I do here is I'm going to use hack motion a little bit with this because it gives us some feedback okay so some people can do this just by feel some people need some extra kind of auditory so I'm using hack motion for this so as I get to the top of the back swing I'm swinging back here and if I my face is wide open there's no auditory here and we've just seen if your face is open you're going to find a way to square it right so I want you here to get a feeling or use the auditory look to

square that face makes sense if the face is square and you get a feel of this I don't have to look at it now look there it is perfect now in a in a place I can start to practice working look down onto this golf ball and all you do is spend some time feeling this you'll see with a lot of players they're often kind of turning those wrists this way whatever you do it doesn't matter it doesn't even have to be exaggerated just get a feel of what square is that's Square that's open Square open if it's Square you're going to make life so much easier on the way through so let's hit a shot here and let's see what [Music] happens so you get a ring a little bell there when you know you've done it correctly so ultimately here you could just spend a bit of time you don't need the hack motion necessarily you could do it by feel if if ordin doesn't work for you but just making a few swings no there and you want to try and eventually make some swings where you hit that position every single time no makes sense so all I'm doing is just spend some time playing around even if you have to exaggerate this and close it down it's going to improve your ball striking and it's going to improve your direction once you've got it in place let's start working on now how you continue improving the strike and adding some more power so you've placed your first building block into a great goal swing you start to manage your Club face let me work on step number two which is really going to help you really amplify your distance and your strike and this is such a simple drill that you can take straight to a golf course so what I have to do my students is I'll get them to grab like it could be a 59 79 whatever and I get them to hold it like a a hockey stick right down here and I get them to kind of put it behind the golf ball and I say to them from here when it's behind the ball how are you going to hit that ball ball really hard and hit that ball a long way from here well what would they do from here they would have to kind of in a sense pull and push so what's going on here well my lead hand here is working left it's also working where up my trail hand is pushing like hell this way right so it's the amazing feeling of exactly what we want to be doing through the impact area now while I get my students to do once they've got this sensation here notice this I'm not getting them to do this this is weak the hands out working ahead and staying there or working straight we are working look on a Ark this way through impact this is where consistency of um uh Direction and power comes from so from here once they've got this feeling I get them to almost hold and feel that position there the way through from there I think when you reverse engineer this process knowing now that you've got to get to here you'll start to make the correct movements back here because imagine this if you do what a lot of people do and they don't turn their hands don't work on a beautiful circle around here if they just do this and pick the club up can we get to that position we've just done no but look I want to work work my lead hand and my hands on an arc to the left in order for they work effectively to the left they also need to work to the right on the way back does that make sense CU now look we can work everything beautifully on an arc back through that shot so learn this drill it will all if you just practice it now almost if you're at home get that sensation it will all make sense to you because from here now I know I've got to be there and driving through all I'm going to do now is work my swing back and because I know my club face is good remember if your face is up and you try to do this you'd hit it so far right but you we've got that good now we're going to work and we're going to try and hit this almost like a hockey shot here look the right hand is hitting hard the lead handam is working round and up and this is going to give you the power you might be asking does it work with driver of course it does exactly the same thing different setup but the same thing let's look at this in action

oh beautiful strike beautiful strike look at that there look now all you do with this is you could have you could bring this as part of your pre-shot routine I might video this actually out in the golf course where you hold the club you've got the faing position hold it there and just imagine from here look that club's going to rip through Square feel that right hand pushing that ball around there feel that the lead hand is really driving up and around develop that sensation you won't need a long swing necessary to do this you could create this and then bang look how my whole body look when I do this my whole right side as well really ripping through that shot so I've just got 7even on here it's carried 175 I could hit this even harder I didn't quite strike that one as well but it's so solid on the way through look at that there look dead straight I can only do that if my club face is ready first trying to do all these moves beautiful moves without a club face ready you'll have no chance the ball will go miles right you'll revert back to hitting it straight by flicking it or coming over the top so sort that out first then use that hockey example here to really help it's the same way driver just push the ball forward up bang and hit it I'll release a video of me out on the golf course doing this with the driver so you can actually see this very very soon now if you enjoy the video give it a thumbs up maybe share it with one of the friends if you want to know more about hack motion I'll details in the top comment below plus a little discount code and of course look if you enjoyed this video and you want to see me out on the golf course doing this check this video out right here but until next week have a wonderful golfing week.
